The New York Jets are moving quickly to replace their coaching staff as defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman is expected to be named the new defensive coordinator, replacing Mike Pettine according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Head coach Rex Ryan confirmed on Tuesday that Pettine, who had been defensive coordinator since 2009, would not be returning next season.

The Jets will promote defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman to defensive coordinator, replacing Mike Pettine.

The word from early reports is that Thurman and Ryan will share defensive play-calling duties:

Thurman has served as the Jets' defensive backs coach for the past four seasons and coached with Ryan in Baltimore previously. Despite the Jets' many struggles this year, their secondary still was among the best in the league as they ranked second in the league with only 3,036 passing yards allowed on the season without the services of cornerback Darrelle Revis.
Finding a new offensive coordinator will likely be a more involved process for the Jets, as they don’t have anyone already on staff who appears deserving of a promotion.
