Ryan Mathews plans to be ‘consistent’ for Chargers in 2013

The Chargers running back still believes that he will become one of the top running backs in the NFL.

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

After a disappointing 2012 campaign, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews plans to prove his worth next season. Mathews started the season with a broken clavicle and ended his season by breaking his other clavicle, ending with just 707 yards in 12 games.

In his first comments since surgery on the second fracture, Mathews said:

“I’ve shown greatness at times, and I’ve shown I can be the worst player at times. You’ve got to be consistent, and that’s what I plan to do, Just be a little more consistent player and just be the guy they knew when they drafted.”

The Chargers selected Mathews with the No. 12 pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, and he has yet to live up to the billing.

Mathews entered the 2012 season as the Chargers featured back, expected to carry the load, but got off to a bad start with a broken right clavicle in preseason. Once he returned in Week 3, he failed to take over as the lone featured back. He never rushed for more than 100 yards in a game and was held to 707 yards and one one touchdown on the season before breaking his left clavicle in Week 15.
