Jaguars coaching rumors: Mike Mularkey likely to be fired, according to report

After hiring a general manager on Tuesday, the Jaguars are now likely to part ways with head coach Mike Mularkey, according to a report.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are likely to fire head coach Mike Mularkey this week, according to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

The news comes after the Jaguars completed their general manager search on Tuesday with the hiring of David Caldwell. Caldwell worked with Mularkey while the two were in Atlanta, but Caldwell is still expected to choose his own head coach. La Canfora mentions San Francisco offensive coordinator Greg Roman as a top candidate. Caldwell and Roman were roommates in college.

Mularkey spent just one season as the Jaguars head coach. He came to Jacksonville after four seasons in Atlanta, but led the Jaguars to just a 2-14 record. Known as an offensive coach, Mularkey was unable to have a major impact on the Jaguars offense. Second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert struggled and the Jaguars finished 29th in the league in yards per game and 30th in the league in points per game.

If the Jaguars part ways with Mularkey as expected, he would be the eighth head coach to be fired since the end of the regular season.
