RGIII injury update: James Andrews calls surgery ‘successful’

The Redskins franchise quarterback undwerwent knee surgery on Wednesday, and early results are positive.

Knee surgery was performed on Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on Wednesday morning to repair a torn LCL and reconstruct an ACL. Jay Glazer reports that Dr. James Andrews is now hopeful that the young star will not miss any playing time from the injury that was worsened during a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks:

“Robert Griffin III had successful knee surgery early this morning. He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction. We expect a full recovery and it is everybody’s hope and belief that due to Robert’s high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season.”

Griffin initially injured his knee against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14. He tried to continue playing through the pain, but eventually removed himself from the game and was replaced by fellow rookie Kirk Cousins. Griffin then sat out the next game, but returned to help the Redskins finish out a seven-game winning streak and advance to the playoffs.

The former No. 2 overall pick was visibly hobbled against the Seahawks in the Wild Card round, but remained in the game until late in the fourth quarter when an errant snap caused him to twist awkwardly on the knee.
