Dolphins vs. Saints 2013: New Orleans builds ‘nearly unbeatable lead’ in division

New Orleans put on a show Monday night, blowing the previously undefeated Dolphins out of the water.

Chris Graythen

On Monday night at the Mercedes Benz Superdome, the New Orleans Saints remained perfect on the young 2013 season with a 38-17 smashing of the Miami Dolphins.

Drew Brees was almost unstoppable in the game, tossing four touchdown passes and hitting on 30 of 39 for 413 yards without an interception. New Orleans also dominated on third down, converting 6 of 13 while Miami could only muster a 3 of 9 mark.

The only blemish on the win for the Saints was the total lack of a running game, which garnered only 68 yards on 24 carries for an ugly 2.8-yard average.

Over at Canal Street Chronicles, Ricky Tiernan discussed what 4-0 means in the NFC South:

The Saints at 4-0 over a 1-2 Panthers team (they had a bye so would remain in place) in second place would complete a commanding and nearly unbeatable lead barring massive mistakes. Being realistic, it is worth mentioning that the Saints play all of these teams again this season and any game can turn the tide.

As for Miami, it was mostly undone by a shaky offensive line and four turnovers by quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The former first round pick had been played excellent ball all year, but picked a bad time to fumble and throw three interceptions.

Kevin Nogle of The Phinsider wrote about what happened and where the Dolphins go from here:

The major take away from this game is, the Saints are a better team. Everyone knew that going into the game, and that the Dolphins would have to be perfect to stay with the Saints. They weren't, and they didn't. But, the team is still 3-1 on the season and heading home. They will have another tough match up with the Baltimore Ravens, but it should not be as tough as what they faced tonight.
