Dwight Freeney injury: Chargers OLB done for the year

Injuries continue to mount for the Chargers with Dwight Freeney also headed to injured reserve.

Jeff Gross

Dwight Freeney's torn quadriceps muscle will require surgery and the Chargers linebacker will miss the rest of the season after he was placed on injured reserve.

Freeney was playing well in his first season with the Chargers before suffering the injury on Sunday. If Freeney had been able to avoid surgery, there would ha a chance he could return later in the season. That wasn’t the case, however, and now San Diego’s outside linebacker depth will be tested even more.

Although he was credited with just half a sack in four games with San Diego, Freeney was playing quite well. He registered 15 quarterback hurries, the second-most among 3-4 outside linebackers, according to Pro Football Focus. Freeney signed a two-year deal with the Chargers, although his future in San Diego could now be in doubt. The second year of his deal includes no guaranteed money.

Freeney was starting after San Diego lost Melvin Ingram for the season during offseason workouts. The Chargers will now rely on Larry English to fill the void. San Diego promoted outside linebacker Thomas Keiser from the practice squad to fill Freeney's spot on the 53-man roster.
