49ers set to sign John Skelton

The 49ers have upgraded their third-string quarterback position.

Andy Lyons

The 49ers are adding experience to their quarterback room in Week 5. San Francisco plans to sign fourth-year veteran John Skelton to a contract, according to the Sacramento Bees' Mark Barrow. Skelton recently worked out for the 49ers after being waived during final cuts by the Bengals, per Barrow.

Skelton spent the entire offseason with the Bengals before he was let go in August after losing the backup quarterback battle to Josh Johnson. He spent three season in Arizona with the Cardinals, who drafted him in 2010 in the fifth round. During his tenure in Arizona, Skelton started 17 of the 20 games that he appeared in and posted 3,707 yards, 15 passing touchdowns and 25 interceptions. He has a career passer rating of 63.

Rookie quarterback B.J. Daniels served as the 49ers third-sting passer behind Colin Kaepernick and Colt McCoy in the first four weeks of the season, but was waived on Tuesday along with fullback Owen Marecic. The team signed linebacker and former Patriot Jermaine Cunningham to fill one of the roster spots.

The 49ers will host the Texans at 8:30 p.m. ET on Sunday Night Football. The game will be televised on NBC.
