UPDATE: Peterson’s son died on Friday night, according to the police.

Adrian Peterson’s 2-year old son in Sioux Falls, S.D., is in critical condition after allegedly being assaulted by Joseph Robert Patterson this week. Patterson was reportedly the boyfriend of the child’s mother. Peterson traveled to Sioux Falls on Thursday to deal with the incident.

Nelson Peterson, Adrian’s father, confirmed that the child involved in the incident was indeed one of Peterson’s sons. Conflicting reports emerged Friday morning as to whether or not the boy in the case was Peterson’s son.

“We are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as deal with this tragic situation,” Nelson Peterson said via Sean Jensen.

The matter was first reported as a “very serious medical issue” involving a family member that would involve police, by Stu Whitney of the Argus Leader.

According to police, Patterson, 27, was alone with the child on Wednesday. He called police that afternoon reporting an injury to the child. At the hospital doctors determined that the boy’s injuries were consistent with abuse.

Patterson was scheduled to appear in court Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. local time.

Peterson was at practice with the team on Friday. He is expected to address the situation afterwards.
