Johnthan Banks the third Buccaneer diagnosed with staph infection, according to report

The Bucs’ staph infection drama continues to develop, as yet another player has been confirmed to be suffering from the infection.

Cornerback Johnthan Banks is the latest Tampa Bay Buccaneer to come down with a staph infection, a source tells Ian Rapoport.

Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik confirmed during a Friday press conference that there is a third case of MRSA, commonly known as staph, but refused to confirm or deny the identity of the player. He said the team has been in contact with the NFL and NFL Players Association.

Guard Carl Nicks and former kicker Lawrence Tynes were infected during training camp over the summer.

The news comes less than 24 hours after it was revealed that Nicks was experiencing a reoccurrence of the infection. Cultures taken from Nicks’ left foot showed trace amounts of MRSA. The two-time Pro Bowler missed the first two games of the season recovering from the infection. His availability for Sunday is unknown.

Tynes, who also contracted a staph infection in his toe during the training camp outbreak, filed an injury grievance with the team on Oct. 1 alleging the team used improper protocol when placing him on the reserve/non-football injury list in August following his infection. The grievance, being handled by the NFLPA, states that Tynes was not tested for MRSA in a timely manner, leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment.

For context on how serious MRSA can be, consider the case of LeCharles Bentley, the former Cleveland Browns lineman who claims his career was cut short by a mistreated staph infection that nearly killed him. Bentley settled a lawsuit with the Browns over the incident last year.
