Da’Rel Scott injury: Giants RB to miss several weeks with strained hamstring

New York was already thin at running back and now the Giants will be without Da’Rel Scott.

Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

Da'Rel Scott is expected to miss a few weeks after the Giants' running back strained his hamstring on Thursday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Scott suffered the injury during the fourth quarter against Chicago. He was New York's No. 2 running back against the Bears with starter David Wilson out with a neck injury. According to a report on Friday, Wilson may have spinal stenosis which could cause him to miss the rest of the season. Now, with Scott expected to miss multiple weeks, the Giants' running back depth will be tested even further. Brandon Jacobs started on Thursday and rookie Michael Cox will likely be elevated into the backup role. Andre Brown is working his way back from a broken leg and would be eligible to return in Week 10.

Scott ran four times against Chicago for 17 yards. He’s been effective at times in a limited role this season, carrying 20 times for 73 yards. He began the season as Wilson’s backup with Brown out, but was surpassed after New York signed Jacobs. The Giants released Scott prior to Week 5, only to re-sign him this week with Wilson out.

New York does not have a running back on its practice squad. If Jacobs or Cox went down during a game, the Giants could rely on fullback John Conner or potentially put linebacker Allen Bradford in the backfield. Bradford was a running back in college at USC and began his NFL career on offense before shifting to linebacker. He rushed five times during his rookie season, gaining 13 yards.
