Steelers vs. Jets 2013 results: Pittsburgh holds Geno Smith in check to pick up 1st win
Pittsburgh’s defense turned in a solid performance and the offense did enough to get into the win column for the first time this season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers got their first win of the season Sunday, dropping the New York Jets, 19-6, to improve to 1-4.
A week after shining in Atlanta, Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith struggled against an attacking Steelers defense and turned the ball over twice in the second half. His first major mistake of the game came when he tossed a red zone interception in the third quarter, snapping a streak of six turnover-free quarters. He threw a second interception in the red zone to linebacker Lawrence Timmons late in the fourth quarter, ending any chance of a Jets comeback.
The Steelers continued to struggle on offense, finding the end zone just once, but moved the ball efficiently and got a big performance from their defense, which held the Jets to 267 offensive yards.
Pittsburgh's lone touchdown came on its first possession of the second half. Ben Roethlisberger found Emmanuel Sanders for 55-yard bomb, hitting him in stride down the right sideline to put the Steelers up 16-6 following the extra point.
The first half was a game of field goals, with both teams moving the ball efficiently but unable to find the end zone. Nick Folk opened the scoring with a 25-yard kick for the Jets in the first quarter, capping a nine-play drive. Pittsburgh then got kicks of 46, 33 and 48 yards during the second quarter, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Jets added one more field goal as the first half closed to head into the locker room down 9-6.
Fantasy Studs and Duds
Roethlisberger was solid on the field, but didn't put up big numbers for fantasy owners. He finished 264 yards and one touchdown. Those hoping for another big outing out of running back Le'Veon Bell in his second start were disappointed, getting just 34 yards and no touchdowns. He received only 16 carries, but that was 11 more than backup Felix Jones, a solid sign moving forward.
It was a bad day for anybody starting a New York Jet. Smith was quiet just 201 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Bilal Powell carried the ball nine times for just 30 yards, and Jeff Cumberland was the leading receiver with 59 yards.

The Steelers easily covered their one-point spread with a 13-point win.
