Titans vs. Seahawks 2013: Seattle defense overcomes ‘comedic errors’ by offense

The Seattle Seahawks fumbled five times on Sunday, but were able to shutdown Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks improved to 5-1 with a victory over the Tennessee Titans, albeit an ugly one, as the defense carried a subpar performance by the Seattle offense to a 20-13 victory at home. While the Seahawks committed five fumbles, they were able to limit Titans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to just 171 yards passing and two interceptions.

On Sunday, Jacson Bevens of SB Nation’s Seahawks blog, Field Gulls, broke down the victory and wasn’t very impressed with a team that committed a “string of comedic errors.”

There are still a lot of things to work on for this team, perhaps a lot more than we anticipated them having at this point. Even so, the Seahawks are 5-1, and that is as much a statement of the quality of this team as anything. The Seahawks defense has been spectacular. The Seahawks offense has been tepid. Nevertheless, the Seahawks are in first place in the NFC. I’ll take it. They’ll need to keep improving, and I think the return of Zach Miller will do that, but I’ll take it.

Jordan Churchill of SB Nation’s Titans blog, Music City Miracles, was complimentary of the team’s defense in the loss, pinning most of the blame on Fitzpatrick’s struggles:

These guys had every opportunity to go out and win this one, including an extremely well-called game by the officials. In the end, the arthritic running game and woeful passing of Fitzpatrick were enough to undo any good the defense created. Heading into another tough game next week against the 49ers, the team needs to do something, anything, to spark the run game, or it will be the same story all over again.

Jake, we miss you buddy.

Jake Locker was carted off the field in Week 4 after suffering a hip injury and isn't expected to return until at least Week 9. Until then, the Titans will have to rely on Fitzpatrick as they'll host the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7. The Seahawks will travel to face the Arizona Cardinals.
