Carl Nicks has surgery to clean out infected toe

Buccaneers offensive guard Carl Nicks is having surgery on his toe after suffering a reoccurence of a MRSA infection.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Former Pro Bowl guard and current Buccaneer Carl Nicks is scheduled to have surgery on his toe on Tuesday to remove a MRSA infection, according to Jenna Laine of Sports Talk Florida.

Nicks initially was diagnosed with the infection during training camp but returned to the field in Week 3 after being treated and deemed free of the infection. He suffered a reoccurrence just a few days before Sunday's Week 6 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. He has only played in two games this season.

Nicks is among three players who have contracted the disease this season. Rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks was also diagnosed in Week 6 but was cleared to play after he was ruled as noninfectious to other players. Kicker Lawrence Tynes was the first player to be diagnosed and is currently receiving treatment, per Laine.

The Buccaneers will travel to Atlanta in Week 7 to face the Falcons on Sunday.
