Robert Griffin III won’t let others dictate his game

RGIII says he won’t let his slow start to 2013 change the way he plays.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

A year after leading his Washington Redskins to a division crown and grabbing the 2012 Rookie of the Year award, Robert Griffin III has stumbled out of the gates in 2013 and his team has started 1-4. Despite the rough start, the quarterback insists he won't let outside pressures dictate how he plays the position.

“Yeah, you know, I’m just really focusing on being the playmaker that I know I can be and not letting anybody else tell me how to play this game,” Griffin told Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “You know, I got here for a reason, and I’ve got to make sure I use all of my abilities to their maximum.”

The comments come in the wake of an ugly 31-16 loss in which RGIII finished with no touchdowns, one interception and a QBR of 37.2.

After breaking into the NFL as one of the league’s most electric playmakers, the quarterback has been hampered by offseason knee surgery to repair a torn ACL and has been unable to return to form. His completion percentage has dropped from 65.6 last season to 59.8 in 2013, and he’s already had as many turnovers this season as he had all of last year (five interceptions and three fumbles).

On a positive note, Griffin looked much more comfortable moving around on his surgically repaired knee against the Cowboys, rushing for a season-high 77 yards.

“...Running the ball is one of [my abilities], when I do get the opportunity,” Griffin told Steinberg. “It’s not that I’m looking for it, but if it is there, I will take it.”
