Randy Starks contract: Dolphins DT wants long term deal

Starks says his strong start to 2013 has been motivated by a desire for a contract extension.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Defensive tackle Randy Starks has largely remained mum on his desire for a new long-term contract from the Miami Dolphins, but admitted to media this week that money has been a significant motivator during perhaps the best season of his 10-year career.

“I’m motivated,” Starks told Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald when asked to explain his hot start to 2013. “Just like everybody else, I want that long-term contract.”

Starks is seeking a long-term extension on the one-year contract he’s playing under, but the Dolphins have remained unwilling to broach contract negotiations.

With the way Starks has played so far in 2013, that could change by season’s end. Coming off his second career Pro Bowl selection in 2012, the defender’s numbers won’t blow you away, but don’t adequately sum up his havoc-wreaking interior rushing abilities. While he has just two sacks, he has pressured the quarterback 14 percent of the time he’s rushed the passer and ranks as a top-10 defensive tackle, according to Pro Football Focus.
