Texans giving Case Keenum first career start vs. Chiefs

In a surprise decision, Gary Kubiak has tabbed the untested hometown kid as his starting quarterback this Sunday.

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak has announced that Case Keenum will get his first NFL start at quarterback this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Keenum, who signed with the Texans in 2012 after going undrafted out of the University of Houston, gets the surprise nod over incumbent starter Matt Schaub and backup T.J. Yates.

The decision comes amid a burgeoning quarterback controversy in Houston, where the expected AFC contenders have stumbled to four consecutive losses and sit well back in the AFC South. With Schaub and Yates struggling recently, it was expected to be a close decision, but the decision to go with the untested Keenum comes as a shock.

Shouts for Schaub's benching escalated quickly after he set an NFL record by throwing a pick-six in four consecutive games. Houston fans cheered when Schaub was injured during last week's blowout loss to the Rams, but quieted quickly after Yates promptly threw a pick-six of his own upon entering in relief.

It seems as though Yates’ performance last week -- 98 yards, no touchdowns and two picks -- was poor enough to push Kubiak to the desperate decision of starting the hometown kid.
