Cowboys exercise caution with DeMarcus Ware’s injury

The Cowboys don’t want to rush their Pro Bowl pass rusher in the lineup too sign and injury him further.

The Dallas Cowboys earned a road victory without seven-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware in Week 7, but owner Jerry Jones is hopeful that the team won't be without his contributions for much longer as they travel to face the Detroit Lions in Week 8.

On Tuesday morning, Jones said on his weekly radio show that the team is being cautious about the veteran’s return from a thigh injury (via Calvin Watkins of ESPN):

“We’re in good shape at running back [but] I wish we were in that good of shape at defensive end regarding Ware,” Jones said. “We want to watch this. He’s got the type of injury that if it comes back to fast, he doesn’t have a tear there now, he doesn’t have an imperfection. If he tries and goes too early he could get an imperfection that’s another world relative to how he’ll be back.”

Before sitting out against the Philadelphia Eagles, Ware had never missed a game since being drafted in the first-round 2005 NFL Draft. Ware, 31, has a franchise-record 115 career sacks, including four sacks tallied in the first six games of the 2013 season.

The Cowboys managed to record three sacks in Ware's absence, including 1.5 from George Selvie, but next face a Detroit offensive line that is tied with the Denver Broncos for the top of the league with only nine sacks allowed through seven games.
