After the 43-year-old former quarterback told a Cleveland radio station earlier this week that he had approached the Browns about a possible comeback, the team informed him that they would be moving on with Brandon Weeden as their starter and Jason Campbell as their No. 2, according to Keith Britton.
“I still do have the tools to be able step in and compete,” Garcia said Wednesday on “NFL AM,” confirming that the offer had not been a joke. “And I think that ... competitive spirit that burns within me, that has taken me through 18 years of playing the game, that just doesn’t fade away.”
Garcia, who spent 11 seasons in the NFL, including a one-year stint with the Browns in 2004, said he was urged by his wife, a Cleveland native, to contact the team. After the season-ending injury to Brian Hoyer and the recent struggles of Weeden, Garcia figured he had nothing to lose.
“Maybe I’m teasing myself, or maybe it’s just one of those things where I haven’t completely left the game, but that’s why I played for so long ... and it’s hard to put that fire out.”
Weeden, the team's 2012 first-round pick, started both of the team's opening losses before being benched in favor of Hoyer, who jumped Campbell to become the starter. Hoyer helped spark a three-game win streak, but was lost for the season with an ACL tear in Week 5 against the Bills. The Browns have lost their last two games with Weeden back in the starting role.
Garcia, most noted for his time with the 49ers from 1999 to 2003, retired in 2009. He is a regular analyst on the NFL Network.
