David Baas injury: Giants C placed on injured reserve, out for the season

The Giants starting center is out for the year with a knee injury, putting the team’s offense in a bind yet again.

USA TODAY Sports

David Baas has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Giants and will miss the rest of the 2013 NFL season, the team announced Wednesday. Baas injured his MCL on the last play of the Giants' opening drive during Monday night's win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Baas had just rejoined the Giants after missing three games due to a neck injury. During preseason, he injured the same knee and sat out through the Giants’ season opener before returning to the field briefly. Baas has never had a reputation for being injury prone in the NFL. He has played 16 games in five of his nine seasons in the NFL, and has never appeared in less than 11 games during the regular season:

“Obviously, you can’t really predict with guys being thrown under your legs and things happen like that, but you’ve got to stay positive,” Baas said. “You’ve got to move on. You’ve got to get healthy again. That’s all I’ve ever known is if something happens, you just work hard at getting back to the best you can, get closest to 100 percent as possible, and that’s what I’ve got to do again.”

Thankfully for Baas, he did not suffer an ACL injury, which could have given him a longer recovery timetable. With running back Andre Brown already listed as the Giants' designated player for return on injured reserve, there is no chance that Baas can return this season, however. The Giants' offensive line is currently ailing, with right guard Chris Snee also on injured reserve.

Jim Cordle is expected to man the center position with Baas out. He has already started three games this season in Baas' absence. The Giants have yet to announce a corresponding roster move to fill Baas' place.
