Brandon Meriweather suspension: Sentence reduced to 1 game after appeal

Meriweather was able to get a game knocked off his suspension, but he will still miss this Sunday’s matchup between the Redskins and the Broncos.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Brandon Meriweather had his suspension reduced to one game without pay after his appeal in front of NFL officer Ted Cottrell, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. The Washington Redskins safety was initially suspended two games after drawing two personal fouls on separate plays for head-hunting Chicago Bears wideouts Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery this past Sunday.

Meriweather's suspension was a result of repeated violations of the NFL's stance against dangerous hits. He earned a $42,000 fine earlier this season for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Eddie Lacy that gave the Green Bay Packers running back a concussion. Meriweather has racked up $137,000 in fines in seven seasons in the NFL. As a result of missing next week's game, Meriweather will lose out on $70,588 of his $1.2 million base salary.

Meriweather had the appeal expedited in hopes that he might be ready for the Redskins' Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos. He will miss the game, but he will be able to return on Nov. 3 to play the San Diego Chargers at home. The Redskins are expected to start rookie safety Bacarri Rambo in Meriweather's place.
