Fred Davis trade rumors: Redskins mulling over options

Head coach Mike Shanahan admitted that the Redskins will have a difficult decision to make in the coming days whether or not to trade tight end Fred Davis.

Fred Davis was marked inactive last week for the first time since his 2008 rookie season and rumors cropped up earlier this week saying that the Washington Redskins may be open to trading the tight end before next Tuesday's trade deadline.

Head coach Mike Shanahan addressed the rumors recently with the Washington Post:, admitting that team is weighing whether or not it'd like to hold on to Davis through the end of the season.

“That’s what people do when you make a decision if you think you need a draft choice, or if you think that person can help you later in the year, especially with an injury,” Shanahan said. “The thing I think that Fred has done, is he had an excellent week of practice. Any time people compete, you feel good about who they are and what they do.”

The Redskins chose to dress Logan Paulsen, Jordan Reed and Niles Paul over Davis against the Chicago Bears last Sunday. Reed, a third-round rookie out of Florida, excelled en route to catching nine passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. The Redskins' depth at tight end, which includes an emerging talent in Reed, could render Davis expendable.

Davis has received criticism this season for being inconsistent in practice and on gamedays. He’s just a couple years removed from a stellar 2011 season, though, when he caught 59 passes for 796 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games played.
