Packers vs. Vikings 2013: What will Minnesota do next?

The Packers won handily over the Vikings on Sunday night to improve to 5-2. The Vikings are now 1-6, and have a few fans advocating to blow up the team.

The Green Bay Packers dismantled the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football, winning 44-31 in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates. The Packers did not punt once during the win as Green Bay went 13-for-18 on third downs, converting two fourth downs and scoring on three Mason Crosby field goals.

The performance was about as efficient as anyone could hope for. As Evan “Tex” Western pointed out at Packers blog Acme Packing Company, several players were able to get in on the act:.

The Green Bay Packers’ offense was on a roll on Sunday night on the fast turf of the Metrodome, racking up 37 points in a rout of the Minnesota Vikings. While Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, and Eddie Lacy were the stars on the night, other contributors like James Starks and Jarrett Boykin made their presence felt as the Packers moved to 5-2 on the season.

Meanwhile, over at Vikings blog Daily Norseman things are ... well, they're not good. Ted Glover gave his weekly stock report, saying "buy" on the idea that the team has quit, outside of Adrian Peterson (with honorable mention to Cordarrelle Patterson and his 109-yard kick return elsewhere in the post).

The Vikings don’t have much to play for, except pride. And they didn’t even show that. Other than Peterson’s ‘get on my back’ 8 yard TD run at the end of the half, no one on the Vikings, especially on the defense, looked like they wanted to be there. It was one of the most embarrassing displays I have had to sit through, and when you think it can’t get any worse, it actually does. I thought Carolina was bad, but then the Monday Night game happened. And now this performance. Even when the Vikings scored a garbage TD in the fourth quarter, they didn’t go for two, which would have gotten them within two scores. Terrible.

Christopher Gates added a word on the quarterback situation in Daily Norseman's recap of the game, namely to say that Christian Ponder was far from the biggest culprit.

The score wasn’t nearly as close as the final tally would indicate, as the Vikings got the Gerhart touchdown and a 19-yard touchdown run from Ponder to make the score nominally closer.

We can say what we want about Minnesota’s quarterback situation. . .lord knows we have and we will. . .but tonight was all about the complete ineptitude of the Minnesota defense. There wasn’t one Minnesota defender that came even remotely close to earning their paycheck this evening, as they just got shredded from pillar to post all night long.

Where the Vikings go from here is anyone’s guess. The team is positioned to make some potentially major moves before Tuesday’s trade deadline. The Packers, meanwhile, have won four straight and are well on their way to another playoff berth.
