Bernard Scott signs with Baltimore Ravens

Bernard Scott has signed with the Ravens to give the team depth behind Ray Rice in place of a banged-up Bernard Pierce.

The Baltimore Ravens have signed running back Bernard Scott to fill the roster spot vacated by the Bryant McKinnie trade, the team announced Monday on its official site. Scott is expected to step into a backup role behind Ray Rice with Bernard Pierce banged up.

Scott was released by the Cincinnati Bengals in September. He had been making his way back from a torn ACL he suffered just five games into the 2012 season. His release was also prompted by the emergence of rookie Giovani Bernard, who has a similar skillset.

Scott isn’t known as a tough between-the-tackles runner, especially compared to Pierce, but he has some speed and has proven to be an adept pass catcher at times. His versatility should fit with what the Ravens like to do on offense.

Pierce is averaging 4.1 yards per carry for his career, but has yet to carry a major load in a season. Scott’s most productive season came in 2011, when he had 380 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 112 carries in 16 games for the Bengals.
