Jason Campbell remains Browns starting quarterback for Week 9

Campbell tallied two touchdowns and nearly 300 yards passing in a Week 8 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Cleveland Browns will be sticking with quarterback Jason Campbell, as head coach Rob Chudzinski announced on Monday that the team will keep the veteran in the starting lineup after he earned his first start of the season in Week 8.

Campbell, 31, started in place of the benched Brandon Weeden and was relatively successful in his Cleveland starting debut, completing 22-of-36 passes for 293 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Although the team lost to the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, 23-17, it had an opportunity late to score a game-winning touchdown before turning over the ball on downs.

After Sunday’s game, Chris Pokorny of SB Nation’s Browns blog, Dawgs By Nature, was enthused by the play of Campbell:

Cleveland has dropped to 3-5, but the play of Campbell this week has to be commended. He was light years better than Brandon Weeden, and fans should have some optimism restored for their Week 9 battle at home with the Ravens next Sunday.

A first-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Campbell has a 31-41 career record as a starter in the NFL, with 78 touchdowns and 52 interceptions.
