Case Keenum named Texans starting quarterback for Week 9

Case Keenum will start over Matt Schaub for the Texans in Week 9 against the Colts as the Texans try to snap a five-game losing streak.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Case Keenum has been named the starting quarterback of the Houston Texans for Week 9 against the Indianapolis Colts ahead of Matt Schaub, head coach Gary Kubiak announced Monday, per reports. Keenum started for the Texans in Week 7 after Schaub injured his ankle in Week 6. The team is coming off a Week 8 bye.

Keenum turned in a serviceable performance against a stout Kansas City Chiefs defense two weeks ago, going 15-for-25 passing for 271 yards and a touchdown. Schaub is attempting to play through torn ligaments in his ankle, an injury that is expected to affect his performance for the rest of the season.

If Keenum remains a viable starting quarterback, there is a chance Schaub remains on the bench for the rest of the year. The veteran quarterback has struggled mightily in 2013 after years of consistent play behind center. He has thrown eight touchdowns to nine interceptions in six appearances. He threw a pick-six in four consecutive games to set an NFL record.

Schaub’s ankle injury in Week 6 drew cheers from frustrated Texans fans, who were promptly scorned by Schaub’s teammates.
