NFL injury report 2013, AFC East: Sebastian Vollmer, Brandon Gibson done for year

The Patriots will have to rely on Marcus Cannon to protect Tom Brady for the rest of the year after Vollmer suffered a season-ending injury on Sunday.

The New England Patriots suffered another serious injury on Sunday, losing offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer for the year with a broken leg, according to the Boston Globe. Also done for the year is Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Gibson, who reportedly suffered a torn patellar tendon in the game.

The loss of Vollmer is significant for an offense that already ranks in the bottom 10 of the NFL in passing and has allowed Tom Brady to be sacked 23 times in eight games. Vollmer is expected to be replaced in the lineup by Marcus Cannon, a fifth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft who has one career start with the team.

Gibson is expected to be replaced by Rishard Matthews, although the Dolphins will almost certainly have to add talent at the wide receiver position, as the team only has three receivers after the loss. While the team is expected to hold some tryouts on Tuesday, a trade is also a possibility, according to Kevin Nogle of SB Nation's The Phinsider.

Rounding out the AFC East injuries of the week was a left elbow injury for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Marquise Goodwin that warranted a cart taking the rookie to the locker room. Goodwin recorded a career-high three receptions for 56 yards before suffering the injury, but X-rays came back negative, according to Joe Buscaglia of WGR550.

The New York Jets escaped Sunday relatively injury-free, although they were on the losing end of a 49-9 rout at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals.
