Sebastian Vollmer injury: Patriots T undergoes surgery on broken leg

Sebastian Vollmer will undergo surgery on his broken leg, and may be out for the season.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Sebastian Vollmer will undergo surgery to repair the broken leg he suffered during the New England Patriots' win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports. Vollmer was carted off the field and had to have his leg put in an air cast after defensive tackle Randy Starks rolled onto the right tackle's leg during the second quarter.

The injury likely means that Vollmer is done for the season, adding to the Pats' already extensive injury list. The team has already lost nose tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo for the season, and has dealt with nagging ailments to tight end Rob Gronkowski, wide receiver Danny Amendola and running back Shane Vereen since the start of the season.

After Vollmer left the game, he was replaced by backup left tackle Marcus Cannon, who was a fifth-round draft pick for the Patriots in 2011. Unless the Pats make a move in free agency, it appears they will be rolling with Cannon in the lineup for the time being. Will Svitek could also see playing time.
