Matt Schaub frustrated by performance, back-up role with Texans

The Texans are going with Case Keenum over Matt Schaub. Schaub is not happy about it.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub is unhappy with coach Gary Kubiak's decision to bench him. Schaub is now healthy enough to play after suffering an ankle injury in Week 6, but Kubiak is going with Case Keenum as the starter.

Speaking with the Houston Chronicle, Schaub expressed frustration with his demotion, but acknowledged that his struggles are to blame for the demotion. “As a player and as a competitor, I don’t like it,” said Schaub, who later added “I understand that I’m part of the reason that we’re in this position.”

Keenum got the start for Houston against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7. The Texans lost, but Keenum shined in his NFL debut, completing 60 percent of his passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he avoided turnovers, which was a big problem with Schaub. Schaub set an NFL record with a pick-six in four straight games and threw nine interceptions in six games.

There's an outside chance Schaub gets the job back if Keenum struggles, but for now the Texans want to give the second-year quarterback a longer look. If he has another good performance against the Indianapolis Colts this week it will be even harder for Kubiak to go back to Schaub.
