NFL news roundup: Josh Freeman fined, Steelers trade for Levi Brown and more

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fined quarterback Josh Freeman, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for left tackle Levi Brown and more you may have missed from Wednesday.

Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fined quarterback Josh Freeman $31,500 on Wednesday. Freeman was fined a portion of that for an unauthorized interview with ESPN, and the rest for missing a team meeting and "conduct detrimental to the team," according to reports. Explaining everything that's gone on with Freeman at this point is difficult, but Wednesday also brought a statement from the NFL on the matter and some pretty negative reports regarding head coach Greg Schiano.

3 reasons why: Fire Schiano

Read on for more you may have missed from Wednesday, but the rest is hardly as scandalous:

Pittsburgh acquires Brown

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially acquired left tackle Levi Brown from the Arizona Cardinals. Pittsburgh sent a conditional pick in the trade, and will likely start him at one of their tackle spots immediately. The Cardinals will go with second year pro Bradley Sowell at left tackle against the Carolina Panthers in Week 5. It should be interesting to see how the move works out for both teams.

Whitner changes name

San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner has changed his last name to "Hitner." The newly named Hitner changed his name as part of a campaign against the NFL and their perceived overzealous approach to penalizing defensive players for hard hits this season. Side note; Hitner will now have to buy every Whitner jersey in the league's supply. Clearly, it's not about the fine money.

Pryor resumes starting role

Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor will start against the San Diego Chargers in Week 5. Pryor missed the team's Week 4 game with a concussion sustained in Week 3. Pryor had admitted he didn't remember the play in which he suffered the concussion and the Raiders were actually investigated for their handling of the situation. Matt Flynn started in Week 4 and played poorly, erasing any thoughts of a QB controversy.

Injury updates all around

There were plenty of injuries worth noting on Wednesday. Rather, there were plenty of injury updates worth noting, and we covered them in a roundup. Click on the link above for more on C.J. Spiller, Stevan Ridley, Jacoby Jones and more.

Jags receive two day-three picks for Monroe

The Jacksonville Jaguars received fourth- and fifth-round picks in 2014 for the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for left tackle Eugene Monroe. The trade was executed on Tuesday, but the compensation wasn't reported until Wednesday. It seems like a small price to pay for Baltimore, and they likely came out of this deal looking much better than Jacksonville. However, the Jaguars need as many extra picks as they can get.
