Cowboys LB Ernie Sims overtakes Bruce Carter as starter

The Cowboys have switched things up at WILL linebacker.

USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys are making a move at weakside linebacker. Veteran Ernie Sims has been taking first-team reps ahead of incumbent starter Bruce Carter during practice leading up to the Cowboys' Week 5 matchup against the Broncos, according to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas.

Carter has started all four of the Cowboys’ games this season and has registered 27 tackles and two sacks. Dating back to last season, the third-year linebacker has started 15 straight games and seemed to be a perfect fit for the Cowboys’ new Tampa 2 defense under Monte Kiffin.

Carter’s play has apparently been discouraging enough to the coaching staff that it has made the switch to the well-traveled Sims. The former first-round pick has bounced around the league from Detroit to Philadelphia to Indianapolis and finally to Dallas, where he has played the last two seasons. Sims has 586 tackles, 5.5 sacks and five forced fumbles for his career.

The Cowboys will host the undefeated Broncos on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS.
