Nick Foles named Eagles starting QB for Week 9 only

Nick Foles has been named the Eagles’ starter at quarterback for Week 9. Beyond then, it’s anyone’s guess whether he or Michael Vick will take over the reins of Chip Kelly’s offense.

Nick Foles will be the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback in Week 9, head coach Chip Kelly announced Wednesday. Beyond this week's game against the Oakland Raiders, Kelly couldn't say whether Foles will remain the starter over Michael Vick, who aggravated his hamstring injury during last week's loss to the New York Giants. Foles was ruled out last week due to a concussion he suffered in Week 7.

Whether Foles can stem the Eagles’ two-game losing streak remains to be seen, according to Brandon Lee Gowton at Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation.

The second year quarterback will take the starting reps in practice as the Eagles prepare for the Raiders. Foles played well in relief of Michael Vick against the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay, but then severely struggled against the Cowboys before leaving the game with a concussion injury. His start in Oakland will be the third of this 2013 season.

Kelly bristled when asked who the Eagles’ long-term starter will be. The question has been a popular one at press conferences this season, but Vick and Foles have rarely been healthy at the same time, which has forced Kelly’s hand on a week-to-week basis. Kelly made it clear that he isn’t interested in deeply discussing the quarterback position until all of his players can suit up. Via NFL.com:

“Let me ask you a serious question,” Kelly said. “How many times are you going to ask me that same question? And in how many ways are you going to go about it. ... The ideal world, Mike’s the healthiest in the world, Nick’s the healthiest in the world, Matt’s the healthiest in the world. At that point in time, we’ll have that conversation.”
