Vikings C John Sullivan wants Christian Ponder to start

At least one Vikings player is choosing sides in the Minnesota quarterback controversy.

USA TODAY Sports

Despite his 0-4 record as a starter this season, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder still has his supporters. Minnesota center John Sullivan believes that Ponder should start in Week 9 against the Cowboys, according to Sid Hartman of the StarTribune. The Vikings have played musical chairs with the likes of Ponder, Matt Cassel and newly-arrived Josh Freeman over the last seven games.

Ponder has completed more than 60 percent of the his passes, but only has gained 836 passing yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions off of those throws. Ponder is 10-18 as a starter over the first three years of his career. The Vikings have wanted to start Freeman over Ponder, but after a dismal performance in Week 7 and a concussion, the former FSU Seminole took the lead in Minnesota's most recent loss against the Packers.

Here is what Sullivan had to say regarding Ponder’s spot in the Vikings lineup:

“[Ponder] prepared really hard and he went out there and laid it all on the line,” Sullivan said. “You know, you see that last run that he made when things were getting out of reach [a 19-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter against the Packers on Sunday] and he’s still out there fighting until the end. I mean, that’s not my decision. But I’d love to see him stay back there, of course.”

“But you can’t let it get to you because if you stay frustrated, you know you’ll roll over into the next week,” he said. “Everyone knows we have to go down to Dallas and face a tough Cowboys team, so we have to watch the film and get ready for them.”

The Vikings travel to Dallas in Week 9 to face the Cowboys Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
