Jairus Byrd injury: S held out of Thursday’s game by Bills head coach Doug Marrone

Doug Marrone made the call to keep Jairus Byrd on the bench during Thursday night’s loss to the Browns, despite the Bills safety saying he was ready to play.

Jairus Byrd felt healthy enough to play during Thursday night's game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns. His head coach, however, put a stop to the safety making his season debut, according to the Buffalo News.

Doug Marrone said that he would have let Byrd play if the safety hadn’t just returned to practice Tuesday.

“I think it’s my responsibility to make sure that we put a player out there that goes full speed for a full week,” Marrone said “If it was a Sunday game, I think it could have been different for us, but on a short week right before ...

“I was happy that he could do it, and I appreciate that. Now we’ll get him in there and get him practicing and get him ready to go.”

Byrd is expected to play in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers after sitting out the Bills' first five games of the season while dealing with plantar fasciitis.

The defensive back's presence was missed Thursday. Brandon Weeden stepped in for the Browns in place of an injured Brian Hoyer and did a nice job against the Bills' secondary, going 13-for-24 passing for 194 yards and a touchdown.

Byrd was frustrated not to be playing, saying “being on the sidelines is not a good place.”
