Brian Hoyer injury: Browns QB has torn ACL

An MRI confirmed that Hoyer tore his ACL during Thursday night’s win over the Buffalo Bills and will miss the remainder of the season.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer has a torn ACL and will undergo season-ending surgery, reports Albert Breer of NFL Network.

Hoyer, who led the Browns to back-to-back wins after taking over for an injured Brandon Weeden in Week 3, limped off the field during the first quarter of Thursday night's 37-24 win over the Buffalo Bills. He took an awkward hit from Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso while sliding to the ground on the Browns' second possession of the game. He was then taken into the locker room and did not return.

A career backup who spent time in New England and Arizona prior to arriving in Cleveland, Hoyer went from third-string to starter after Weeden sprained his thumb in a loss to the Ravens. With the Browns sitting at 0-2, Hoyer led them to wins over the Vikings and Bengals, putting up 590 yards, five touchdowns and three picks in the process.

It's a tough blow to a Cleveland team that has built momentum with three straight wins since trading away star running back Trent Richardson.

Weeden struggled initially after Hoyer exited Thursday night, but composed himself enough to finish with 197 yards and a touchdown. Hoyer was 2-of-4 for 25 yards before being forced out.

Cleveland’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft, Weeden will resume the starting job he initially won in training camp.
