Chris Snee injury: Giants G placed on IR

The 10-year vet’s season -- and possibly career -- ended on Friday with hip surgery that sent him to IR.

USA TODAY Sports

Update: The Giants announced the move to place Snee on the season-ending IR on Friday.

Veteran New York Giants guard Chris Snee is expected to be placed on season-ending injured reserve and undergo hip surgery to repair a torn labrum, according to Mike Garafolo at FOX Sports.

The injury has caused limited mobility in the joint, hampering Snee's ability to move effectively. He did not make the trip to Kansas City last week for the Giants' loss to the Chiefs. Third year man James Brewer started in his place.

Snee underwent similar surgery on his other hip this offseason. The ten-year NFL veteran, who is in the final year of his contract, mulled retirement prior to the 2013 season. A trip to the IR could signal an inglorious end to his career.

It's another bad break for a 0-4 Giants team that has been riddled with injuries along the offensive line. Center David Baas is unlikely to play Sunday against the Eagles with a neck injury, and guard David Diehl will be making his first appearance of the season after sitting out the first four weeks with an injured thumb.

Diehl will replace Brewer at Snee’s right guard position this weekend.

The Giants have constantly had to shuffle around the protection in front of Eli Manning, and the results have been abysmal. Manning has been sacked 14 times through four games, the fourth highest total in the league. The Giants running attack is ranked 30th in the NFL and is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry.
