E.J. Manuel injury: Bills QB out at least 4 weeks with LCL sprain

E.J. Manuel is expected miss at least four weeks with the knee injury he suffered Thursday night, making undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel the Bills’ starting quarterback for the time being.

E.J. Manuel will likely miss at least four weeks and up to eight weeks with an LCL sprain he suffered during the Buffalo Bills' loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, according to Bills beat writer Joe Buscaglia. Head coach Doug Marrone announced earlier in the day Friday that the quarterback would miss "a few weeks."

Manuel suffered the injury while trying to extend a first down instead of going out of bounds during the third quarter. He was seen writhing in pain on the sideline. According to Marrone, the quarterback will not require surgery.

Unless the Bills hit the free agent market, undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel is expected to take over as the team's starting quarterback for the time being. That said, the Bills may not be opposed to signing a more proven starter. Josh Freeman, recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, could potentially garner interest.

Manuel was almost held out of the season opener due to offseason knee surgery, but recovered quickly enough to be named the Bills' starter against the New England Patriots. His career is off to a promising start. Through four games and change, Manuel is 85-for-150 passing for 985 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has 91 yards rushing on 25 carries.
