Panthers LB Jon Beason traded to Giants

The veteran defender has passed his physical and is now officially on his way to New York.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason has passed a physical and is officially a member of the New York Giants, according to Ian Rapoport.

The Panthers and Giants agreed early Friday morning on a trade that would send the three-time Pro Bowler to New York, but had been awaiting the results of the physical to finalize the deal, according to ESPN. No word on what the Giants will be sending in exchange, though Jay Glazer reports that talks include late-round draft compensation.

Coming off offseason microfracture surgery, Beason has failed to show the form that once made him the backbone of the Carolina defense. He was benched in favor of Chase Blackburn prior to the Panthers' 38-0 win over the Giants in Week 3.

After a meeting between Beason and Rivera on Thursday, it was apparently decided that the two sides should part ways.

“The trade benefits both the team and Jon,” Rivera told ESPN. “We’ll obviously get something out of it and it gives Jon an opportunity to get on the field.”

In his prime, Beason was one of the premier defenders in the NFL. He broke into the league with 140 tackles in 2007 and finished as a runner-up for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He posted at least 100 tackles in each of the following two seasons and earned three trips to the Pro Bowl between 2008-11.

Injuries began to take their toll from there on, however. Since his Pro Bowl season in 2011, he has played in just seven games.
