Vikings, Josh Freeman agree to 1-year contract

The former Buccaneers quarterback wasn’t on the market long.

The Vikings will sign former Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback Josh Freeman to a one-year contract, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Freeman was released by the Buccaneers on Thursday, Oct. 3, following several months of internal drama between the veteran quarterback and head coach Greg Schiano. Rookie Mike Glennon assumed the starting role in Week 4 as Freeman was benched and kept from the sideline.

The former starter and first-round pick will likely compete with Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel for starting snaps in practice and will look to become the Vikings quarterback at some point this season. This move likely moves either Cassel or Ponder down the depth chart (or possibly both). Both Cassel and Ponder have started for the Vikings, who were on a bye in Week 5.

Freeman was selected with the 17th pick of the 2009 NFL draft. He entered the NFL with one year of eligibility remaining, making him a five-year veteran at just 25-years old. He was ineffective in the first three games of the season, throwing for 571 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions for a career-low quarterback rating of 59.3.

In his five years Freeman has thrown for a total of 13,534 yards, 80 touchdowns, 66 interceptions and a rating of 78.8.
