Matt Schaub faces questions as Texans’ starting quarterback

Matt Schaub’s mental state may be ready to fracture after another disastrous outing against the 49ers on Sunday.

Matt Schaub threw his fourth pick-six in as many games Sunday, setting a dubious NFL record before Being pulled from the game before the fourth quarter for the first time since being acquired by the Houston Texans in 2007. Schaub is still "very confident" in his ability, according to ESPN's Tania Ganguli, but many are wondering about the quarterback's mental state.

During his post-game press conference, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said that Schaub is still the Texans’ starting quarterback. His explanation of Schaub’s benching, however, suggested that he could be open to making a switch.

"I think it was time for him [T.J. Yates] to get some reps," Kubiak said. "Obviously, Matt took some hits and made some mistakes. And I just told him I was going to put T.J. in the game -- and we're going to go from there and talk about it after the game or throughout the course of the week and see where we're at."

For the game, Schaub went just 19-for-35 passing for 173 yards, and three interceptions that would have been four if safety Eric Reid had been able to hang on to an errant third-quarter pass to Owen Daniels. Schaub finished the game with a 32.2 passer rating.

As you can imagine, Texans blogger TexansDC at Battle Red Blog was unhappy with the performance of Schaub and the team as a whole. Backups Yates (who went 3-for-5 for 15 yards) and Case Keenum may not be the answer to the Texans' woes, according to BRB.

The Texans may need a shakeup, beginning with a new head coach, or at least some new blood behind center.

Even if Kubiak does return, with a Bob McNair mandate to replace Schaub, the next starting quarterback of your Houston Texans is not on the roster. He’s playing college football and has a date with destiny with the Texans pick in the first round next year.
