Browns exploring new options at quarterback

Tyler Thigpen is one potential option for the Browns, but it seems unlikely they’ll find a starter to supplant Brandon Weeden.

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns are in the market for an additional quarterback after losing starter Brian Hoyer for the season on Thursday night to a knee injury. On Monday, head coach Rob Chudzinski told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the Browns were "looking at [their] options" after the team's quarterback options were slimmed to just Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell.

One player who is no longer a potential option is former Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman, who signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night. The Browns were reportedly uninterested in Freeman though, leaving only a few other potential options for the team.

With Freeman off the market, Weeden’s starting job would appear to be safe for the time being, since there aren’t many other quarterbacks available who will be able to compete for a starting role in Cleveland.

One name that has been tossed around as a potential addition for the Browns is journeyman Tyler Thigpen. The former Chiefs, Dolphins and Bills quarterback has completed 54 percent of his career passes with 21 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, compiling a 1-11 record as a starter.

Other unemployed passers who have recently received calls from NFL teams include Pat White, Dennis Dixon and David Carr.

The Browns will play the third game of a three-game homestand on Sunday when they play host to the Detroit Lions in Week 6.
