Markus Wheaton injury: Steelers WR will miss Week 6 with broken finger

Wheaton is still a week away from having the stitches in his hand removed after he broke his pinky finger in Week 4.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie receiver Markus Wheaton will not be available for the team's Week 6 game against the New York Jets, as he works to recover from a broken pinky that still has stitches, Wheaton told Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Wheaton, 22, was a third-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, but has just three receptions for 26 yards in four games with all three coming against the Minnesota Vikings in a Week 4 loss. Last week, Neal Coolong of SB Nation's Steelers blog, Behind The Steel Curtain, predicted that Derek Moye would be the player to step into Wheaton's place if he was unable to play against the Jets.

According to Bouchette, Wheaton will not have the stitches in his hand removed until next Monday, which would possibly put his availability for a Week 7 game against the Baltimore Ravens in doubt, as well.

In his senior season with the Oregon State Beavers in 2012, Wheaton accumulated 91 receptions for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors.
