Gary Kubiak evaluating Houston’s quarterback situation

Could Matt Schaub get benched in Houston? Gary Kubiak left the door open for a change during his press conference.

Matt Schaub was benched during Sunday's game against San Francisco, and Texans head coach Gary Kubiak left the door open for a possible change at quarterback going forward during his press conference on Monday.

“He is,” Kubiak said when asked if Schaub was still the team’s starting quarterback, via the Houston Chronicle. “But I’m in the evaluation process.”

That isn’t exactly an announcement that Houston would hold an open competition at quarterback. Kubiak, however, did not directly say Schaub would start against St. Louis this week, leading some people who follow the team to read between the lines.

Schaub has struggled this season with his interceptions up and his yards per attempt down. He’s had an interception returned for a touchdown in four straight games, a NFL record. Houston is coming off three straight losses and is now 2-3 on the season. Kubiak said it’s been a rough three weeks for Schaub and the team.

“I’m trying to help (Schaub) push him through it so our team can push through it,” Kubiak said. “We’re all disappointed because we’re having to overcome too much.”

Schaub completed 19-of-35 passes for 173 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by T.J. Yates. The 26-year-old Yates started five regular season games in 2011 when Schaub was injured. The Texans have a bye in Week 8, which could be an ideal time to make a change if Schaub continues to struggle during the next two games.
