Dallas Cowboys release Will Allen, per report

The Cowboys have let go of a veteran safety on Tuesday.

Ronald Martinez

Former Cowboys starting safety Will Allen is now a free agent. Dallas released the 10-year veteran Tuesday after just five games with the team, according to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas.

Allen signed with Dallas in the offseason and was expected to be a full-time starter for the 'Boys. The former Steeler and Buccaneer started the first two games of the season, but was benched after Week 2. He played sparingly following his demotion and the Cowboys clearly did not value him as a special teams player. Allen was a part of the Dallas defense that allowed 51 points to the Broncos in Week 5.

Allen registered nine tackles, three pass deflections and one interception in five games this season and should receive interest from other teams as a backup safety. He played for the Buccaneers from 2004-2009 and was with the Steelers from 2010-2012.

The Cowboys will host the Redskins on Monday Night Football in Week 6.
