Tony Gonzalez doesn’t want trade to Chiefs

Despite Atlanta’s early-season struggles, Tony Gonzalez does not want to be traded.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

With the Falcons dropping to 1-4, there was speculation the Falcons could trade Tony Gonzalez back to the Kansas City Chiefs. Gonzalez shot that idea down and said he does not want to be traded, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Gonzalez, who nearly retired after last year, decided to come back for one final season and a last attempt to win a Super Bowl. Atlanta's postseason aspirations have taken a massive hit though, and it will be an uphill battle for the Falcons to even make the playoffs.

The Chiefs have a hole at tight end and are 5-0, so naturally there was speculation Gonzalez could return to where his career started to finish his run at a Lombardi Trophy. Instead, it appears Gonzalez will remain with the Falcons, with Glazer reporting the tight end said he “absolutely does not” want to be traded and wants to finish his career in Atlanta.

With 33 catches and 339 receiving yards in five games, Gonzalez proved he can still play at a high level. While he may not want a trade, Andrew Hirsh of The Falcoholic wrote trading him could be the best move for the Falcons and Gonzalez:

But now that it’s abundantly clear Atlanta will not be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy any time soon, Thomas Dimitroff and the entire organization owe it to Gonzalez to trade him so he can have the opportunity to reach his ultimate goal.

Seeing Gonzalez depart is going to be painful no matter what, but here’s the way I see it: He’s going to leave soon regardless of whether or not he finishes the year with Atlanta -- that’s a fact. It’s worth it to bring that goodbye closer if it 1) puts Tony in a better spot, and 2) improves the Falcons long term.
