Julio Jones to have season-ending foot surgery next week

Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones will undergo surgery after receiving a second opinion on his ankle, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported. The surgery will end Jones’ season and he will be placed on injured reserve, Schefter adds.

“Unfortunately, Julio’s appointment with the doctor today confirmed our initial findings,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said, on the team’s website. “He is scheduled to have a season-ending procedure on Monday.”

Jones suffered the injury during the Falcons’ loss to the Jets on Monday Night Football in Week 5. Jones is just one of the many major casualties of the season for Atlanta. He is currently second in the league in receiving yards (580) and the injury comes at a time when the team is 1-4. Fellow starting wide receiver Roddy White has also been dealing with a high-ankle sprain that has hurt his game significantly this season. Veteran wide receiver Harry Douglas is listed as Jones’ immediate backup.

The loss of Jones will likely mean more attention for White and tight end Tony Gonzales. The Falcons will be on a bye in Week 6 and will likely add another wide receiver to the roster for added depth to the unit.
