UPDATE: Head coach Marvin Lewis announced Friday that results of an MRI exam have confirmed Geno Atkins’s injury is indeed a torn ACL and that he will miss the remainder of the 2013 season, according to NBC Sports.
Geno Atkins injury: Bengals DT out for season with torn ACL
An MRI confirmed Friday that one of the leagues’s top defensive lineman suffered a torn ACL during the Bengals’ loss to the Dolphins on Thursday night.
Geno Atkins went down in the second quarter of Thursday night's game with a right knee injury. Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis confirmed after the game that Atkins suffered an ACL injury, and it appears that the defensive tackle may be out for the season. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Atkins will undergo an MRI on Friday to confirm that he suffered a torn ACL, which would likely land him on injured reserve.
The Bengals had a disastrous Thursday night, losing Atkins in addition to losing to the Miami Dolphins on a walk-off safety in overtime. Atkins had been playing well before leaving the game, recording a sack among his two tackles. He is regarded as one of the pass rushing defensive tackles in the NFL, and he has proven it by racking up six sacks through nine games this season.
The Bengals' defense has been snake-bitten when it comes to injuries. The team has placed eight players on injured reserve this season, and all of them have played on the defensive side of the ball. Earlier this week, the team added top cornerback Leon Hall and hybrid safety/linebacker Taylor Mays to the list.
Unless the Bengals turn to free agency for a starter, it appears the team will move forward with 2012 draft picks Devon Still and Brandon Thompson filling in for Atkins, a two-time All-Pro.
