Darrelle Revis ‘hasn’t been healthy enough’ for press coverage

Darrelle Revis admitted Thursday that he hasn’t been playing much press coverage this season due to a knee injury. He is healing and should be playing on “Revis Island” again soon.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans have been clamoring for Darrelle Revis to play more press coverage this season. The man earned the nickname "Revis Island" after all, and it wasn't for playing zone. Revis revealed Thursday that the reason why he hasn't been playing one-on-one against receivers is that he hasn't been healthy, according to the Tampa Tribune. Revis said that his reconstructed left knee has been gave him trouble early in the season.

“Earlier in the year, I didn’t have the explosion to play press; the receiver would just run the (vertical) 9-route on me and I didn’t have the stamina to do that play in and play out, especially playing press,” Revis said. “ ... I’m starting to get that back now, which is awesome because I like to be in receivers faces and try to put my hands on them and try to be physical with them.”

Revis said that he played more press coverage against the Carolina Panthers last week. He did a nice job holding Steve Smith to just four reception for 42 yards, though the Bucs were ultimately embarrassed as a team in the Thursday night loss.

After a long layoff, he should be even healthier for Sunday's game on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. That's good news for a fanbase that is muddling through a winless season and drama surrounding Greg Schiano. At least fans should be able to fully enjoy a relatively healthy Revis soon.
