Richie Incognito had context on his mind when he went on the Fox Sports pregame show with Jay Glazer on Sunday. The suspended Dolphins lineman defended his threatening messages to teammate Jonathan Martin by telling the cameras that was just how he and Martin talked to each other. The big revelation was supposed to be a text message Incognito received from Martin threatening to "kill his whol f'ing family."
Jonathan Martin’s text message to Richie Incognito was a meme
Jonathan Martin’s text message to his teammate required a little context.

Martin’s attorney, David Cornwell, gave the world a little more context about that text message.
It was an internet meme, complete with a pet making a funny face.

Pundits keep trying to infuse every leaked message and player statement drifting up from the Dolphins locker room. Martin being too sensitive was a popular suggestion on talk radio and Twitter on Thursday. Incognito tried to ride that wave in his sit down with Glazer, a man he once paid to train him during the offseason.
Now there’s more context to the story. Martin’s text message, however stupid, ill-advised or sophomoric it may be, has an entirely different feel to it when it looks like something he might have pulled off a Reddit forum.
Context being key, a dog “smiling” with copy thrown over it doesn’t quite measure up to someone threatening to take a dump in your mouth. Or forcing someone to pay for $30,000 trip to Vegas. Or even the suggestion of gang raping Martin’s sister, as one message from an unnamed recipient revealed by Cornwell Thursday did.
