Cincinnati Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis has had measured success this year, but there's a reason why his start to the season was slightly off pace. The running back revealed to Bengals.com that has been playing with a broken thumb this season, as well as dealing with an ankle injury.

Green-Ellis has run for 460 yards this season and is on pace for 736 yards. This would be his lowest total since arriving in Cincinnati, and some of his opportunities are being given to rookie Giovani Bernard. Green-Ellis offered somewhat encouraging news on his injury status, saying “I think I’m feeling better.”

Matt Ufford offers you fantasy advice on Riley Cooper, Colin Kaepernick, Bills running backs and more.

Despite the broken thumb, Green-Ellis remains one of the league’s most sure-handed running backs. He has fumbled four times in his career, carrying the ball a total of 928 times. It’s likely that his role will continue to be diminished as he likely becomes a short-yardage back, ceding the lion’s share of carries to Bernard.

With Andy Dalton being inconsistent under center, a healthy offense is the key to Cincinnati getting back on track and pushing for a playoff spot.
