Jay Cutler injury: Bears QB placed in ankle cast

Jay Cutler’s injured ankle has been placed in a cast, in a precautionary move by the Bears.

The Chicago Bears have placed a hard cast over Jay Cutler's injured left ankle, Michael C. Wright at ESPN reports. Cutler was spotted wearing the cast Wednesday. Head coach Marc Trestman insisted Thursday that the decision to use a cast was precautionary.

“The doctors and the trainers talked about just making sure that it’s stabilized,” Trestman said. “It wasn’t swollen after the game [on Sunday]. It was swollen certainly on Monday, and they just wanted to make sure it was stabilized. That’s really the only thing I know about it at this time. It is a hard cast.”

While a hard cast often signals a serious injury, the Bears may simply be taking a cautious approach in this case. The cast will promote quicker healing, as opposed to a walking boot that can be removed at the player’s discretion.

Trestman called Cutler "week-to-week," and Cutler has already been ruled out for the game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Josh McCown will play once again in Cutler's place.

Cutler suffered the injury during the loss to the Detroit Lions last week. He was pulled before the Bears' final offensive possession, after his worsening mobility in the pocket became too significant to ignore. After the game, Trestman admitted that he left the quarterback in the game too long.
